RIG INSPECTION AND SURVEYS

Maintaining your rig in optimum condition is essential.  Masts are often thought of as an inert object standing up in the sky...not so.  They are machines, and when they are in your vessel they are constantly working!  Although many older rigs may look fine to the untrained eye, there can be less obvious signs that signify that it’s time for a full rig inspection and service.  At times reports are needed to satisfy insurance requirements. Our rigging survey and customer reports will help you to identify any potential issues, before they become troublesome or unsafe.

We understand that nothing is more important to a yacht than keeping everything on schedule.  With two Rhode Island locations - Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard and Safe Harbor New England Boatworks - we are always capable of getting your inspection carried out. Alternatively, we regularly travel to inspect and survey rigs off site and report on any rigging work that may be required.  These inspections are often followed up by a service period at a location and time convenient to both the yacht owner and crew.

NDT TESTING, ULTRASOUND SCANS, DYE PENETRANT TESTING

When rigging fails, it can do so without warning and with disastrous results. Lack of maintenance, unseen corrosion, continued fatigue cycling, and/or poor articulation in fittings can all lead to catastrophic failure of standing rigging and metal fittings.

An experienced eye may be able to pick up visible faults, depending on the history and information available, there may also be additional methods of testing to determine if flaws are present. Often this is at the request of an insurance provider, or if an unexpected incident has occurred onboard.

Newport Rigging Group works with some of the finest ultrasound technicians, who are solely focused on composite, alloy, and stainless-steel structures found in rigs and other marine structures.  Ultrasound scans in particular are often able to be undertaken without even taking the yacht out of service.

SAIL HANDLING & FURLING SYSTEMS

Maxi Yacht Rolex 2009 066.jpg

As any experienced sailor will know, when it comes to sail control, a high performance, free running headsail or mainsail furling system can make all the difference.  A wide variety of systems allow shorthanded racers and cruisers to furl large sails safely, without leaving the cockpit.  Increased ease of use leads to more time under sail, less hours on the motor, and more fun!

The latest generation of top down furlers, utilizing torsion stays and lightweight line drivers/bearings, has brought additional convenience to handling downwind and asymmetric sails.

We are very familiar with sail handling systems by Southern Spars, Marten, Hall, Rondal, Offshore Spars and  Leisureful booms.  Also headsail systems by Reckman, Harken, Bamar and Cariboni are regularly worked on by our technicians.

Newport Rigging Group can service, install and detail all types of furling systems – advising on the best system to suit your boat, be it manual or powered.
